The South Face is the part of the park most exposed to the open sea, which is why pelagic fish are found here in particular. It belongs to the Calhaus, a rock formation that breaks the surface 22 nautical miles from Santos, close to Laje de Santos but a little farther for those leaving from the mainland.
Because it lies far from the coast, the Calhaus area allows encounters with manta rays and even sand tiger sharks in winter. On the outer side of the Calhaus, rock slabs and boulders form interesting structures, with a chance of seeing larger fish and passing schools.
The Calhaus were already described in a diving magazine in April 1988. They were also one of the subjects of the documentary Laje dos Sonhos, which shows diving at the site. The Laje de Santos State Marine Park, where they lie, was created in 1993 by Decree 37,537 and was the first marine park in the State of São Paulo.
