Brazil
The Pedra da Risca do Meio State Marine Park, where Cabeço do Balanço lies, was created by State Law No. 12,717 of September 5, 1997. Fishermen call the park's rock formations “riscas” or “cabeços”, and the protected area sits in the central portion of the area, hence the name “Pedra da Risca do Meio”.
At Cabeço do Balanço, divers descend guided by a rope fixed to the bottom down to the corals. Near the corals, the fauna and flora become richer, with schools of small colorful fish, lobsters, moray eels, sponges, algae and sharks. On one reported dive at the site, there was a lambaru about one meter long, a school of xila covering the entire rock, and angelfish. Across the park as a whole, 131 fish species have been recorded.
In Fortaleza, the months from January to June, a period with little wind, tend to be the most favorable for diving.
