Brazil
The crane was used in the 1950s in port loading and unloading operations, such as handling timber that arrived on rafts. Because timber from the riverbanks was easy to ship along the river, several sawmills had been set up in Presidente Epitácio in 1947. On the surface, there is now a hardwood pier.
In February 1971, the only steam crane at the port of Epitácio was without its boiler, which had been removed two months earlier by workers of the E.F. Sorocabana, and there is no confirmation that it was the same crane as at this site. Without that crane, shipowners went through almost the entire wheat and peanut harvest without equipment to make unloading the grain at the port easier.
In Presidente Epitácio, part of the town ended up underwater with the construction of a hydroelectric power plant on the border with Mato Grosso do Sul. In the region, the Porto Primavera reservoir on the Paraná River was filled in two stages, in December 1998 and in March 2001. In 2014, Presidente Epitácio was voted the city with the most beautiful sunset in Brazil in a contest held by the TV Globo programme Fantástico.
