Brazil
Before it was called Altamar, the ship was USS Chiron, a name that honors a centaur of Greek mythology known for his skill in medicine. On 19 May 1947 it was sold to the Argentine company Navemar S.A. and, in 1948, it sailed under the Argentine flag as MV Altamar, on regular voyages to Brazil, mainly carrying grain. It left Buenos Aires on 6 March 1960 bound for Belém and, on 27 March, at 7 p.m., it struck a coral head and ran aground on the Parcel Manoel Luís. The 35 passengers and crew abandoned the ship in lifeboats.
The wreck became known as the Navio do Cobre (Copper Ship) because of its cargo of copper pipes, removed from the wreckage during salvage expeditions in the early 1970s. The wreck symbol CN 2 on nautical chart 21500 corresponds to it and to the Ilha Grande, and the two are treated as a joint site, Ilha Grande/Altamar. In the Parcel region, March tends to be the most suitable month for diving.
