Abu Galawa - Small Wreck

The small wreck of Abu Galawa is a private American sailboat that sank in the 1980s. The hull is still intact, well preserved and nicely overgrown.

The name comes from the shape of the reef: in Arabic, "galawa" is the pool or lagoon formed by the coral reef. In Egyptian, Abu Galawa Soraya means "Little Father of the pool". The site is made up of four small reefs with a small lagoon between them.

The sailboat has a nice coral cover, is full of soft corals and is populated by glass fish; with luck, frog fish can be found on the wreck. Close by there is a beautiful hard coral garden with huge stone corals and, in some areas, many giant clams. The hard corals, in excellent condition, are the highlight of the dive, which also brings together many types of fish. Bluespotted stingrays, lionfish, clownfish, whitetip reef sharks, sea slugs, boxfish, anthias, stonefish and scorpionfish have been seen at the site.
