Egypt
Because of its size, Abu Diab cannot be circled in a single dive, and the reef shelters boats that moor there overnight. Even so, few boats stop there, because liveaboards coming from the south usually sail straight to Fury Shoals, 13 km to the north. When the boat is moored at the southern tip, the southwest side allows night dives into the caves.
Along the southwest and north walls lie coral gardens made of large boulder corals, where shrimps, sea slugs and pipefish turn up, besides moray eels and blue spotted stingrays. Some parts of the reef walls are damaged, probably because of fishing in the area.
In the Hamata region, diving is usually best from May to October, when there is less wind and the sea is less choppy.
